Start with the product
A packaging brief starts with the bottle, rather than the outside of the box. Record the bottle dimensions with the cap fitted, its weight, and any parts that extend beyond the main shape. If a set includes several bottles, cards or accessories, list each item separately.
Distinguish the bottle size, the usable space inside the box and the final outside dimensions. These describe different things. A physical bottle or an accurate drawing helps the packaging discussion move beyond a visual reference.
Consider the opening and the insert together
A separate lid, a hinged opening and a sliding drawer create different opening sequences. Compare them with the way the product will be presented, packed and handled. The most suitable choice depends on the project; a more elaborate structure is not automatically a better fit.
The insert should be discussed at the same time. Consider which part of the bottle is supported, whether the cap can move and how a customer will lift the bottle out. A presentation sample should be checked with the actual product.
Use a sample to resolve the details
Review the closed box, the open box and the act of removing the bottle. Check the visual alignment, the feel of the surfaces and the fit of the insert. If the packaging will travel by parcel or bulk shipment, discuss the additional transport packaging and any testing requirements.
For an initial enquiry, send the bottle dimensions, intended quantity, market and a small number of references. These give a clearer starting point than choosing a box from a photograph alone.
