Comparing paper and finishing through samples

Look at colour, texture, lettering and touch together when reviewing a packaging finish.

Review the complete material combination

The visible paper surface is only part of the packaging. When discussing a rigid box, distinguish the wrapping paper from the board beneath it and from the insert. Ask how the proposed combination relates to the product, structure and intended use.

A paper weight, a thickness measurement and a finished-box dimension are different specifications. Record the units and the material each value refers to.

Choose an effect with a purpose

Metallic details, raised or recessed marks, printed patterns and different surface textures can bring different emphasis to a design. Start with the parts of the brand identity that should stand out, rather than adding every available effect.

Review small lettering, large colour areas, folds and edges in a physical sample. A screen image cannot show the full surface feel or the way a finish changes as the box moves in the light.

Keep a clear approval reference

Record the selected paper, colour reference, finishing position and artwork version. Note which details are final and which still need confirmation.

Use the agreed sample and written requirements together when discussing production. Avoid attaching unverified material, recycling or certification claims to a visual reference; confirm those separately when they matter to the project.
